5 vragen met Jörn Fricke

We’re back with the “5 questions with” series! Today we’re getting to know Jörn. As Jörn is from Germany, we’ll start with the English version first. Scroll down to read it in Dutch

Who are you and what is your role at Urban Living Lab Breda? 

I’m Jörn Fricke, a researcher at Urban Living Lab Breda. I’m originally from Germany, but my father was a navy officer, so we moved countries every three years to countries like the US and Belgium. I later did an exchange semester at the University of Utrecht and eventually decided to stay there and graduate in Human Geography of Developing Countries. Currently, I’m a professor of Leisure in a Social Context at Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) and overseeing the research being conducted at Urban Living Lab Breda.  

How did you get involved with Urban Living Lab Breda?  

I did research in Mexico for a year in human development and later got hired at BUas, where my colleagues approached me offering to work with Urban Living Lab Breda, connecting my professorship to the company. This was an amazing opportunity for me since it gave me a flying start in my research within community development, providing projects and funding all in one place. 

What’s something unusual about your job?   

Every week is a surprise at Urban Living Lab Breda! There’s so much diversity in the work we do here that there’s always new ideas popping up spontaneously, so I’m very flexible day-to-day. Adding on to that, as a professor at a university of applied sciences, I’m not necessarily a teacher in a traditional sense. I often have my boots on the ground in our different neighbourhoods, figuring out how to create impact within communities, which is not the image of a professor some people have.  

How do you and your work contribute to this?  

Urban Living Lab Breda is a cooperation platform for our partners and local communities to work on the broad prosperity. A lot of the work I do contributes to this. For example, I’m involved with the project ‘Building Sustainable Communities’. It aims to build connections between people in a neighbourhood, while also making sure these connections last in the long-term. We have the resources at Urban Living Lab Breda to bring people together that wouldn’t normally be together and design sustainable spaces for the long term. All the while it’s important to me that we don’t lose sight of the main goal in our work: the broad prosperity.  

What’s something you’re most proud of in your work at Urban Living Lab Breda? 

I’m proud of our capability of putting abstract concepts into practice, like “asset-based community development” or “broad prosperity” and most importantly making an impact on people’s lives with these concepts. To give this terminology a meaning in real life and to see how this is positively influencing a community is a great collective feature that I’m super proud of here at Urban Living Lab Breda.

Wie ben je en wat is je rol bij Urban Living Lab Breda?
Ik ben Jörn Fricke, een onderzoeker bij Urban Living Lab Breda. Ik kom oorspronkelijk uit Duitsland, maar mijn vader was een marineofficier, dus we verhuisden om de drie jaar naar landen zoals de VS en België. Tijdens een uitwisseling aan de Universiteit van Utrecht besloot ik te blijven en af te studeren in Menselijke Geografie van Ontwikkelingslanden. Momenteel ben ik professor ‘Vrije tijd in een Sociale Context’ aan Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) en houd ik toezicht op het onderzoek dat wordt uitgevoerd bij Urban Living Lab Breda.

Hoe ben je betrokken geraakt bij Urban Living Lab Breda?
Ik deed een jaar onderzoek in Mexico naar menselijke ontwikkeling en werd later aangenomen bij BUas, waar mijn collega’s mij benaderden met het aanbod om samen te werken met Urban Living Lab Breda. Dit was een geweldige kans voor mij, omdat het me een vliegende start gaf in mijn onderzoek binnen gemeenschapsontwikkeling, met projecten en financiering allemaal op één plek.

Wat is iets ongebruikelijks aan je werk?
Elke week is een verrassing bij Urban Living Lab Breda! Er is zoveel diversiteit in het werk dat we hier doen dat er altijd nieuwe ideeën spontaan opduiken, dus ik ben van dag tot dag erg flexibel. Daarbovenop ben ik als professor aan een hogeschool niet noodzakelijkerwijs een leraar in de traditionele zin. Ik sta vaak met mijn poten in de klei in onze verschillende buurten, uitzoekend hoe we impact kunnen creëren binnen gemeenschappen. Niet bepaald het beeld van een standaard professor.

Hoe dragen jij en je werk hieraan bij?
Urban Living Lab Breda is een samenwerkingsplatform voor onze partners en lokale gemeenschappen om te werken aan de brede welvaart. Veel van het werk dat ik doe draagt hieraan bij. Ik ben bijvoorbeeld betrokken bij het project ‘Building Sustainable Communities’ dat als doel heeft om verbindingen te bouwen tussen mensen in een buurt die voor de lange termijn blijven bestaan. We hebben de middelen bij Urban Living Lab Breda om mensen samen te brengen die normaal niet samen zouden zijn en duurzame ruimtes te ontwerpen voor de lange termijn. Altijd is het belangrijk voor mij dat we het hoofddoel in ons werk niet uit het oog verliezen: de brede welvaart.

Waar ben je het meest trots op in je werk bij Urban Living Lab Breda?
Ik ben trots op ons vermogen om abstracte concepten in de praktijk te brengen, zoals “asset-based community development” of “brede welvaart” en, het belangrijkste, om een impact te maken op de levens van mensen met deze concepten. Om deze terminologie een betekenis te geven in het echte leven en te zien hoe dit een gemeenschap positief beïnvloedt, is een geweldige collectieve eigenschap waar ik supertrots op ben hier bij Urban Living Lab Breda.
