Beyond Borders: Involve internationals to make Breda better
As an international student that has experienced multicultural backgrounds and environments, I understand the importance of collaboration between locals and internationals. Working with people with a variety of backgrounds gives me the chance to gain new approaches to life and understand different points of view. By working together, we all learn from each other and broaden our mindsets, so we can be prepared for the future.
Recognition of talents
In my opinion, being active in the city helps me to fit into the local culture and social life. It helps me to understand the importance of having a place to call home and feel accepted.
However, I feel that the talents of many internationals are currently underutilized in this city. Although there is some collaboration with the students in the English taught programs in Breda University of Applied Sciences and Avans Hogeschool, there are still limited opportunities for them to get involved in local sustainable projects of all sorts. Many international students are simply unaware of how they can get involved. Urban Living Lab Breda is no stranger to this matter, that is why they are looking to work closely with the international community, by making their projects more inclusive and accessible.
The vision
The goal of Urban Living Lab Breda is to shape a city with a high level of livability through community engagement, inclusivity and sustainability. To make this happen, collaborating with international citizens of Breda is essential: It brings diverse ideas, skills and culturally sensitive solutions that can benefit everyone. The city can gain new ideas seen through the eyes of people who draw on experiences from all sorts of backgrounds and cultures. As international residents of the city, their viewpoints can spot challenges and come up with creative solutions that might have not been addressed by the local residents, simply because they are too used to the surroundings.
Inclusivity
By including internationals in projects and the city, they will not just be an anonymous number in the population, but a true valuable one. Participating in the city will help them integrate more into the Dutch culture and experience it first-hand. It will allow them to learn the language and local cultures which is crucial to anyone that is looking to make The Netherlands their long-term home. Getting involved in the projects the international community will gain more insight knowledge into Breda’s unique culture. They will become a part of the city and develop a sense of belonging. When internationals are heard they will feel encouraged to share their cultural ideas and experiences to further build a livable Breda.
Inclusive city
What will happen if locals of Breda and internationals unite to make this happen? Picture this, locals and internationals bringing their strengths, perspectives and experiences together to build an inclusive city and community where everyone is welcome, listened to and respected. There is a lot to gain for Urban Living Lab Breda when they further boost their cooperation with the internationals in the city.
Future for Breda
At the end of the day, whether you are a lifelong resident or a new one, everyone plays a part in a livable Breda. Instead of despising one another, we can work together and combine our strengths to build a more inclusive and sustainable future for all of us.
